Being There for the People You Love

Updated October 5, 2026

There is always a reason to be busy. Another project, another deadline, another thing that can be improved. I don’t want to become so focused on building a future for my family that I miss the life we are already living together.

A familiar evening might begin with someone finally sitting down after a long day. There are dishes waiting and a message still unanswered. A person they love calls from another city. They had agreed to talk, although neither of them has anything dramatic to announce.

At first, the conversation moves through the usual subjects: work, the weather, what happened during the week. Then a small disappointment comes up. Something went badly, and it has stayed with the person longer than expected. The listener can already think of several possible solutions.

The conversation beneath the conversation

In a moment like this, it is easy to begin solving a problem before hearing the whole story. Advice can come from genuine care. Yet the person speaking may still be trying to understand why the experience hurt, or may simply want someone familiar to know what their day felt like.

When the listener lets the account unfold, another detail may emerge. The difficult part was feeling overlooked. What sounded like a practical problem carries a more personal worry. A little patience allows the conversation to reach that place, where an immediate answer may matter less than being understood.

For me, a good life includes being present, listening, keeping commitments, and helping when something is difficult. A conversation like this gives those intentions a place in an ordinary week. Nothing about it needs to look impressive from the outside for it to matter to the two people involved.

Of course, evenings do not always leave us alone. In this example, an urgent task might interrupt the call. The listener may genuinely need to deal with it. Agreeing on a time to finish talking gives both people something clear to expect. Returning to the conversation later makes that small promise real.

A place in each other’s day

There are seasons when time is especially scarce. Shift work, caring for someone, financial pressure or distance can make ordinary contact difficult. Love does not give anyone an unlimited supply of energy. A shorter call that both people can manage may carry more warmth than an ambitious plan that keeps falling through.

The people closest to us also have different ideas about time well spent. One enjoys talking through every detail. Another feels comfortable walking together or sharing a meal without much conversation. Someone living alone may find this closeness with a sibling, an old friend or the people who have become family over the years.

By the end of our imagined evening, the dishes may still be waiting. The problem on the other end of the call may also remain. But the person who had a difficult day has been heard, and the person listening knows a little more about someone they love. They have shared part of the life that is happening now.

These moments rarely announce their importance. They become familiar through repetition: a conversation remembered, a promise kept, an ordinary evening enjoyed together. The future deserves our effort. The people beside us, or waiting for our voice from far away, are already part of the good life we hope to build.

I wrote about appreciating the good already present in our lives in this LinkedIn post.
